Crew Connect Europe 2018 focused on soft skills, leadership and teamwork

The seafarer of the future must possess substantial soft skills together with the necessary technical skills. This was one of the key messages of the Crew Connect Europe conference.

The automation of many processes on board like safe navigation, disaster prevention etc., relieves seafarers from many routine technical tasks, allowing them to focus more on managerial operations. This means that the maritime industry has to adjust to new circumstances, selecting seafarers with enhanced soft skills.

Particularly, soft skills were characterized as “equally important as technical skills” according to Mr. Alfred von der Hoeh, managing director of Marlow Navigation. This was also supported by several speakers, who stated that attitudes like leadership, resilience and social sensitivity of seafarers are more important than their experience.

CAT by Safebridge, was developed to support crewing professionals in assessing the soft skills of seafarers during selection, development or promotion.
